First reports for the production dates May 23, 2013, when it was announced J. C. Chandor would write and direct the film. A24 acquired the US rights on January 22, 2014.
Javier Barden joined on June 5, 2013, to play the lead. Jessica signed on July 16, 2013, to play the female lead. Oscar Isaac was announced to be replacing Barden on December 3, 2013. Jessica revealed that she wrote director J.C. Chandor an impassioned three page letter, after Barden departure, asking him to consider Oscar Isaac for the lead role. They were friends since the Juilliard era, but Oscar only got acknowledge of this during the press tour. Charlize Theron was the first choice to play Anna Morales, but she passed on.
Principal photography began on January 29, 2014 in New York City, and ended on May 15, 2014.
A Most Violent Year received positive reviews, specially praising Oscar and Jessica’s performances. Jessica received several nominations, including a Golden Globes and an Independent Spirit Awards. She also won – as well Oscar Isaac and the film itself – a National Board of Review as supporting actress.
