All of us here at the soot-and-grime encrusted enclave of cinephilia that is Indie Movies HQ have been on tenterhooks for weeks now, just dying to find out which movies will be featuring at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Well, the tension has just been released, as we now know which flicks will be sunning themselves in the south of France from the middle of next month.

More details to follow on the films, the directors, what looks particularly exciting, what looks a bit ho-hum, and all things Cannes (uh, just the Film Festival we mean. Not the actual town so much). But for now let”s just unfurl that big list of titles. Ready? ’cause here we go…

The complete jury roster has also been announced, with Britain’s very own Kate Beckinsale amongst those reporting for duty, as well as the Magnum Man himself, Benicio Del Toro. In terms of the movies the obvious big talking point is the omission of Terence Malick’s Tree of Life. While it is perhaps not a huge surprise that something directed by a man who took two decades between his second and third films has failed to be completed in time for inclusion, it is still a bit of a disappointment that such an eagerly anticipated project won’t be debuting at Cannes.

It seems that people are reluctant to abandon the idea of finally getting to see it, with speculation continuing that it may make a belated appearance on the list. Empire had a nice bit of goss from star Brad Pitt, who answered their question as to whether or not the film was of the sci-fi genre with the following: “”Well, in a way. It’s this little tiny story of a kid growing up in the 50s with a mother who’s grace incarnate and a father who’s oppressive in nature. So he is negotiating his way through it, defining who he’s gonna be when he grows up. And that is juxtaposed with a little, tiny micro-story of the cosmos, from the beginning of the cosmos to the death of the cosmos. So that’s where the sci-fi – or the sci-fact – comes in.”

Okay, so we’re not much further along in our understanding of the famously enigmatic director’s film, which has already passed two of its slated release dates – but that’s only whetting our appetites for more info. The cast list is known (rumoured?), however, and it’s a mighty roll-call of about thirty names with Sean Penn, Fiona Shaw and Jessica Chastain at the top alonsgside Mr Jolie.
